Product Description
E309LMo-16 is a premium ultra-low carbon stainless steel electrode compliant with AWS A5.4/A5.4M standards, designed for dissimilar metal welding and high-temperature applications. Featuring a high-chromium composition (22.0-25.0wt.%) with 12.0-14.0wt.% nickel and elevated molybdenum (2.0-3.0wt.%), it provides superior crack resistance and corrosion resistance compared to standard 309/309L grades. Compatible with SMAW (stick) process with DCEN or AC operation, it supports welding of stainless steel to carbon steel, buffer layer applications, and acid-resistant clad steels.
Features
▪ Superior Corrosion and Crack Resistance: Offers exceptional resistance to intergranular corrosion due to ultra-low carbon content (≤0.04wt.%), combined with enhanced pitting resistance from molybdenum addition. Significantly superior to 309/309L in crack resistance and high-temperature performance due to higher molybdenum content.
▪ Stable Performance: Austenitic structure with excellent mechanical properties, including tensile strength of 550-750 MPa and elongation ≥30-40%. Weld metal exhibits good ductility and toughness, matching base material properties without post-weld heat treatment. Suitable for welding in temperatures up to 815°C (1500°F).
▪ Excellent Weldability: Ensures smooth arc action with minimal spatter, easy slag removal, and fine bead appearance free from undercut and porosity. Compatible with DCEP (DC+) and AC polarities, it adapts to all-position welding with lower current recommended to prevent cracking and minimize base metal dilution.
Applications
▪ Ideal for dissimilar metal welding and corrosive environments, E309LMo-16 is widely used in:
▪ Chemical Industry: Reactors, pressure vessels, and piping systems handling acidic media, particularly in high-temperature sulfur-containing environments.
▪ Petrochemical Industry: Dissimilar welding between carbon steel and stainless steel components, buffer layers for clad steels, and equipment requiring acid resistance.
▪ Power Generation: Boiler components, high-temperature piping, and joints between different steel grades requiring corrosion and heat resistance.
▪ General Fabrication: Overlay welding on non-alloy and low-alloy steels to obtain corrosion or heat resistance, ideal for ASTM 316 equivalent surfacing.

FAQS
What is the main advantage of E309LMo-16 over standard E309L?
E309LMo-16 provides superior crack resistance and corrosion resistance due to higher molybdenum content (2.0-3.0%), making it ideal for acidic and high-temperature environments.
Is preheat required when welding with E309LMo-16?
Preheating is typically not required for most applications, but interpass temperature should be controlled below 150°C for optimal results.
Can E309LMo-16 be used for surfacing to obtain 316L equivalent composition?
Yes, when used for surfacing, the composition obtained from the very first run is approximately equal to ASTM 316 stainless steel.
