Product Description
E2209-16 is a premium duplex stainless steel electrode compliant with AWS A5.4/A5.4M standards, designed for welding 22% chromium duplex stainless steels such as UNS S31803 (Alloy 2205), UNS S32205, and lean duplex grades like UNS S32101 and S32304. Featuring a balanced composition with 21.5-23.5wt.% chromium, 8.5-10.5wt.% nickel, 2.5-3.5wt.% molybdenum, and controlled nitrogen addition (0.08-0.20wt.%), it produces a duplex weld metal with approximately 30-55% ferrite content. Compatible with SMAW (stick) process using AC or DC+ polarity, it supports welding of similar duplex alloys and dissimilar joints requiring high strength and corrosion resistance.
Features
▪ Superior Corrosion Resistance: Offers exceptional resistance to pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking, especially in chloride-containing environments including seawater. The combination of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen provides excellent protection in offshore, oil, gas, and petrochemical applications.
▪ Stable Performance: Duplex microstructure combining austenite and ferrite phases provides high tensile strength of 690-860 MPa, yield strength of 610-790 MPa, and good elongation of 25-30%. The electrode is over-matched in nickel content (2-3% higher than base metal) to maintain proper ferrite balance in the as-welded condition.
▪ Excellent Weldability: Ensures smooth arc action, minimal spatter, and easy slag removal with stable AC/DC operation. Designed for all-position welding except vertical-down, it offers controlled heat input requirements and good puddle control. Requires electrode re-drying at 300-350°C for 1 hour before use and interpass temperature control.
Applications
▪ Ideal for high-strength corrosive environments, E2209-16 is widely used in:
▪ Offshore Industry: Oil and gas platforms, seawater cooling systems, and desalination plants.
▪ Chemical & Petrochemical: Pipelines, pressure vessels, and process equipment handling chloride and sulfide-containing media.
▪ Power Generation: Flue gas desulfurization (FGD) units and components exposed to corrosive environments.
▪ General Fabrication: Welding duplex to carbon steel, duplex to austenitic stainless steel (where high ferrite content is acceptable), and repair of duplex components.
