Product Description

ER308 is a widely used austenitic stainless steel filler metal compliant with AWS A5.9/A5.9M standards, designed for welding Types 301, 302, 304, 305, and 308 stainless steels. Featuring an 18Cr-8Ni composition with 19.5-22.0wt.% chromium and 9.0-11.0wt.% nickel, it provides balanced ferrite content (typically 3-19 FN) for excellent crack resistance. Compatible with GMAW (MIG), GTAW (TIG), and SAW processes using appropriate shielding gases, it supports welding of similar austenitic stainless steels and dissimilar joints requiring moderate corrosion resistance.

Features

▪ Superior Weldability: Offers excellent arc stability, smooth metal transfer, and minimal spatter. The weld metal provides appropriate ferrite content (typically 9-19 FN in MIG/TIG applications, 3-6 FN for low ferrite variants) ensuring high resistance to hot cracking and solidification defects.
▪ Stable Performance: Austenitic structure with typical tensile strength of 550-620 MPa, yield strength of 400-450 MPa, and elongation of 35-44%. The balanced composition of chromium and nickel ensures good mechanical properties and moderate corrosion resistance. For critical applications, low carbon variants (ER308L with C≤0.03%) provide enhanced intergranular corrosion resistance.
▪ Versatile Application: Compatible with all-position welding using various shielding gas combinations. For GMAW, Ar+1-3% O2 or Ar+2% CO2 mixtures are recommended. For GTAW, 100% Argon shielding is typical. Available in spooled wire (0.8-2.0mm) for MIG/SAW and cut lengths (1.6-5.0mm) for TIG welding.

Applications

▪ Ideal for general-purpose stainless steel fabrication, ER308 is widely used in:
▪ Food Processing Industry: Equipment, tanks, and piping requiring clean welds and corrosion resistance.
▪ Chemical & Petrochemical: Process equipment, storage tanks, and piping handling moderately corrosive media.
▪ Automotive: Exhaust systems and components requiring corrosion resistance at elevated temperatures.
▪ General Fabrication: Sheet metal work, architectural applications, and welding of 300-series stainless steels where service conditions are not severe.

FAQS

图片名称

What base materials is ER308 suitable for welding?

图片名称

ER308 is primarily designed for welding un-stabilized austenitic stainless steels such as Types 301, 302, 304, 305, and 308, particularly for general-purpose applications where corrosion conditions are moderate.

图片名称

What shielding gas should be used for ER308 welding?

图片名称

For GMAW (MIG), use Ar+1-3% O2 or Ar+2% CO2 with a gas flow rate of 20-25 L/min. For GTAW (TIG), use 100% Argon with a flow rate of 8-15 L/min.

图片名称

What is the difference between ER308 and ER308L?

图片名称

ER308 has a maximum carbon content of 0.08%, while ER308L has ultra-low carbon (≤0.03%) for enhanced resistance to intergranular corrosion, making ER308L suitable for cryogenic and corrosive applications requiring better corrosion performance.
