Product Description
ER80S-Ni1 is a solid nickel-steel welding wire compliant with AWS A5.28 standards, designed for gas metal arc welding (GMAW/MIG) of low-alloy steels requiring improved low-temperature toughness. Featuring a composition with 0.12% maximum carbon, 1.25-1.80% manganese, and 0.40-0.80% silicon, enhanced with 0.80-1.10% nickel, it provides excellent impact toughness at temperatures down to -45°C (-50°F). The nickel addition significantly improves ductility and notch resistance in low-temperature service compared to standard mild steel wires. Compatible with 75% Argon/25% CO2 or higher argon content shielding gases, it produces weld metal matching 1% nickel base materials.
Features
▪ Enhanced Low-Temperature Toughness: The 1% nickel alloy addition provides significantly improved Charpy V-Notch impact values at sub-zero temperatures, meeting requirements down to -45°C (-50°F). Essential for cryogenic and cold climate applications requiring brittle fracture resistance.
▪ High Strength and Ductility: Delivers tensile strength of 550-690 MPa, yield strength ≥470 MPa, and elongation ≥19%. The nickel-enhanced composition maintains excellent ductility while providing strength matching 1% nickel steels such as A203 Grade E.
▪ Good Deoxidation: The combination of silicon and manganese provides adequate deoxidation for welding on reasonably clean steel surfaces. The alloy content helps prevent porosity while maintaining weld metal integrity in low-temperature service.
▪ Versatile Gas Compatibility: Performs well with 75% Ar/25% CO2 and argon-rich shielding gas mixtures. Higher argon content (80-95% Ar) is often preferred for improved arc stability and reduced spatter in critical applications.
Applications
▪ Ideal for low-temperature applications requiring weld metal with excellent notch toughness, ER80S-Ni1 is widely used in:
▪ Cryogenic Storage: Storage tanks, pressure vessels, and piping for liquefied gases requiring weld toughness at temperatures down to -45°C, including intermediate temperature cryogenic service.
▪ Northern Climate Infrastructure: Pipelines, storage tanks, and outdoor structures in cold climate regions requiring weld metal toughness to withstand low ambient temperatures and prevent brittle fracture.
▪ Pressure Vessels: ASME code vessels and pressure equipment requiring Charpy V-Notch testing at low temperatures, including vessels for low-temperature chemical processing and gas distribution.
▪ Low-Temperature Piping: Process piping and distribution systems operating at sub-zero temperatures in petrochemical, gas processing, and cold storage applications.
