Product Description
AWS E309-16 is a versatile austenitic stainless steel welding electrode compliant with AWS A5.4 and ASME SFA-5.4 standards, specifically engineered for welding dissimilar metals and heat-resistant stainless steels. With a nominal composition of 23Cr-13Ni, this electrode provides an alloy-rich weld metal designed to dilute effectively when joining stainless steels to carbon steels, low-alloy steels, or when welding similar stainless alloys in high-temperature applications. The rutile-type coating enables operation on both AC and DCEP (DC+) current with excellent arc characteristics across all welding positions except vertical-down, delivering smooth spray-like transfer, low spatter, and self-detaching slag for superior weld appearance and ease of cleanup.
Features
▪ Superior Dissimilar Metal Welding Capability: The high chromium (22-25%) and nickel (12-14%) content provides an over-alloyed weld metal that compensates for dilution when joining stainless steels to carbon or low-alloy steels, preventing the formation of martensitic structures that could cause brittleness and cracking. This makes E309-16 the industry-standard electrode for applications requiring transition between different steel families, such as clad steel welding or connecting stainless components to carbon structural steel.
▪ Excellent High-Temperature Performance: The 23Cr-13Ni composition delivers outstanding oxidation resistance and creep strength at elevated temperatures up to 1000°C, making it ideal for heat-resisting applications including furnace components, boiler parts, and high-temperature process equipment. The balanced austenitic-ferritic microstructure (typically 5-15 FN) provides excellent thermal cycling resistance and maintains mechanical integrity under repeated heating and cooling cycles.
▪ Outstanding Weldability & Operator-Friendly Characteristics: The rutile coating provides stable arc initiation, smooth spray-like arc transfer, and minimal spatter, while the self-detaching slag characteristics significantly reduce cleanup time and eliminate slag inclusion risks. Operators can achieve consistent weld bead appearance across flat, horizontal, vertical-up, and overhead positions with directional arc control that deposits metal precisely where directed, reducing rework and improving welding efficiency.
▪ Balanced Mechanical Properties: Delivers impressive tensile strength (550-92,000 psi/550-635 MPa), good yield strength (470-68,000 psi/324-469 MPa), and excellent ductility (30-47% elongation) with ferrite numbers typically ranging from 5-16, providing optimal resistance to solidification cracking and ensuring reliable weld performance in both structural and pressure applications requiring robust joint integrity.
Applications
▪ Dissimilar Metal Joining: Primary application for welding austenitic stainless steels (Types 304, 304L, 308, 309) to carbon steels, low-alloy steels, and other dissimilar metals where the over-alloyed composition compensates for dilution and prevents brittle martensite formation. Extensively used in shipbuilding for joining stainless hull sections to carbon steel structures, petrochemical facilities for connecting stainless process equipment to carbon steel supports, and power generation for welding stainless internals to carbon pressure vessels.
▪ Clad Steel & Stainless Lining Welding: Essential for welding the stainless steel clad side of clad steel plates and fabricating stainless steel linings in vessels, tanks, and piping systems. Used as a barrier layer before applying corrosion-resistant overlays, particularly in chemical processing equipment where carbon steel structural components are protected with stainless cladding or linings to provide corrosion resistance at the service interface.
▪ Heat-Resistant Applications: Designed for welding AISI Types 309, 309S, and similar heat-resistant stainless steels in applications requiring sustained operation at elevated temperatures. Commonly used in furnace components, boiler parts, kiln furniture, and high-temperature process equipment where oxidation resistance and creep strength at temperatures up to 1000°C are critical for reliable long-term performance.
▪ Food Processing & General Fabrication: Widely employed in food and beverage processing equipment where excellent corrosion resistance and cleanability are essential, including mixers, storage tanks, and processing vessels. Also used for general stainless steel fabrication, maintenance and repair welding of stainless castings, and overlaying worn components with a corrosion-resistant stainless surface in demanding industrial environments.

FAQS
When should I choose E309-16 over E308-16 for stainless steel welding?
Use E309-16 when welding dissimilar metals (stainless to carbon/low-alloy steel), clad steel, or Type 309 stainless; choose E308-16 only for welding Type 304 and similar 18-8 stainless steels in similar metal applications requiring lower chromium content.
What preheat and interpass temperature requirements apply when welding high-carbon steels with E309-16?
Preheat to 150-200°C for high-carbon steels and thick sections; maintain interpass temperatures below 150°C to control heat input, minimize dilution effects, and prevent thermal cracking in the heat-affected zone.
Can E309-16 be used for vertical-down welding position?
No, E309-16 is rated for all positions except vertical-down; use reduced amperage with weaving techniques for vertical-up welding, and consider alternative electrodes if vertical-down welding is absolutely required by the application.
