Product Description

AWS E316-16 is a molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel welding electrode compliant with AWS A5.4 and ASME SFA-5.4 standards, specifically designed for welding Type 316 and similar stainless steels requiring enhanced corrosion resistance. Featuring a rutile-type coating with nominal composition of 18Cr-12Ni-2.5Mo and maximum carbon content of 0.08%, this electrode provides exceptional resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion through molybdenum addition while maintaining excellent weldability across all positions except vertical-down. The molybdenum enhancement significantly improves corrosion resistance against chlorides, sulfur compounds, and acidic environments, making E316-16 the industry-standard choice for chemical processing, marine applications, and food processing equipment where aggressive corrosive media are present.

Features

▪ Superior Pitting & Crevice Corrosion Resistance: The 2.0-3.0% molybdenum content dramatically enhances resistance to localized corrosion, particularly in chloride-containing environments such as seawater, brine solutions, and industrial chemicals. Molybdenum strengthens the passive chromium oxide film and provides protection against chloride-induced pitting, making this electrode ideal for marine applications, chemical processing equipment, and any environment where chlorides or halide compounds are present.
▪ Enhanced General Corrosion Resistance: The 18Cr-12Ni-2.5Mo alloy composition provides excellent resistance to a wide range of corrosive media including sulfuric acid, sulfurous acids, sulfites, and organic acids. The balanced chromium-nickel-molybdenum combination creates a stable passive film that protects against general corrosion attacks, making E316-16 suitable for applications involving multiple corrosive agents where standard 304-grade electrodes would fail.
▪ Excellent Weldability & All-Position Capability: The rutile coating ensures smooth, stable arc characteristics with minimal spatter, easy arc initiation, and consistent weld metal deposition across flat, horizontal, vertical-up, and overhead positions. Self-detaching slag characteristics reduce cleanup time and minimize slag inclusion risks, while the electrode performs effectively on both AC and DCEP current, providing flexibility for various workshop and field welding applications.
▪ Balanced Mechanical Properties with High Ductility: Delivers tensile strength of 520-87,000 psi (520-600 MPa), good yield strength (400-58,000 psi/276-400 MPa), and excellent elongation (30-45%) with ferrite numbers typically ranging from 7-12, providing optimal resistance to solidification cracking and ensuring reliable weld performance in both structural and pressure applications requiring robust joint integrity in corrosive environments.

Applications

▪ Chemical Processing & Petrochemical Equipment: Primary application for welding Type 316 and 316L stainless steel equipment in chemical plants, petrochemical refineries, and pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities. Used extensively for reactors, storage tanks, piping systems, and process vessels exposed to corrosive chemicals including sulfuric acid, chlorinated compounds, and organic acids where superior pitting and crevice corrosion resistance is essential for equipment longevity and safety.
▪ Marine & Coastal Applications: Essential for marine construction including shipbuilding, offshore platforms, desalination plants, and coastal infrastructure where exposure to seawater and salt-laden atmosphere creates severe chloride corrosion challenges. The molybdenum-enhanced weld metal provides critical protection against pitting and crevice corrosion that rapidly attacks standard 304-grade stainless steel in marine environments, ensuring long-term structural integrity and reduced maintenance requirements.
▪ Food & Pharmaceutical Processing: Widely employed in food and beverage manufacturing equipment, pharmaceutical processing vessels, and biotechnology facilities where equipment must withstand frequent cleaning with aggressive sanitizing agents and maintain sterile, corrosion-free surfaces. The excellent corrosion resistance against organic acids and chlorinated cleaning solutions, combined with easy-to-clean weld surfaces, makes E316-16 ideal for sanitary applications requiring strict hygiene standards.
▪ General Industrial Fabrication: Used for welding Type 316 stainless steel components across various industries including pulp and paper processing, textile manufacturing equipment, soap handling facilities, and general industrial applications where enhanced corrosion resistance provides operational advantages over standard 304-grade materials. Suitable for both new fabrication and repair welding of existing 316 equipment exposed to mildly corrosive industrial environments.

FAQS

图片名称

What is the primary advantage of molybdenum in E316-16 compared to standard E308-16?

图片名称

Molybdenum (2.0-3.0%) significantly enhances resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, particularly in chloride-containing environments such as seawater and industrial chemicals, making E316-16 superior to E308-16 for marine, chemical processing, and any application involving chlorides or halide compounds.

图片名称

When should I choose E316-16 over E316L-16 for stainless steel welding?

图片名称

Use standard E316-16 for general-purpose welding of Type 316 stainless where maximum carbon content (≤0.08%) is acceptable and high-temperature creep strength is beneficial; select E316L-16 (≤0.04% carbon) for applications requiring maximum intergranular corrosion resistance or post-weld heat treatment where sensitization risks must be eliminated.

图片名称

Can E316-16 be used for welding Type 304 stainless steel as an over-alloyed option?

图片名称

Yes, welding Type 304 with E316-16 is acceptable and provides enhanced corrosion resistance due to molybdenum content; however, this practice is not cost-effective unless the application specifically requires the improved pitting resistance that molybdenum provides in chloride-containing environments.
