Product Description

ER308L is an ultra-low carbon austenitic stainless steel filler metal compliant with AWS A5.9/A5.9M standards, designed for welding Types 304L, 321, 347, and other 300-series stainless steels. Featuring an 18Cr-8Ni composition with 19.5-22.0wt.% chromium, 9.0-11.0wt.% nickel, and maximum carbon content of 0.03%, it provides superior resistance to intergranular carbide precipitation. Compatible with GMAW (MIG), GTAW (TIG), and SAW processes using appropriate shielding gases, it supports welding of similar and dissimilar austenitic stainless steels, particularly where enhanced corrosion resistance or cryogenic service is required.

Features

▪ Superior Corrosion Resistance: Ultra-low carbon content (≤0.03%) significantly reduces the risk of intergranular carbide precipitation during welding, providing excellent resistance to sensitization and maintaining full corrosion resistance in the heat-affected zone. Ideal for chemical processing, food, and pharmaceutical applications where corrosion resistance is critical.
▪ Cryogenic Performance: Low ferrite variants (3-6 FN) offer exceptional toughness at cryogenic temperatures down to -196°C (-320°F), with Charpy V-Notch impact values typically exceeding 27 J (20 ft-lbs) at -196°C. This makes ER308L ideal for LNG storage, cryogenic vessels, and hydrogen tank applications requiring reliable low-temperature service.
▪ Stable Performance: Austenitic structure with typical tensile strength of 550-620 MPa, yield strength of 390-440 MPa, and elongation of 34-45%. The balanced composition ensures excellent weldability, smooth arc action, minimal spatter, and good mechanical properties. Available in spooled wire (0.8-2.0mm) for MIG/SAW and cut lengths (1.6-5.0mm) for TIG welding.

Applications

▪ Ideal for corrosion-sensitive and cryogenic applications, ER308L is widely used in:
▪ Food & Pharmaceutical Industry: Equipment, tanks, piping, and processing vessels requiring high purity and corrosion resistance.
▪ Chemical & Petrochemical: Process equipment, storage tanks, and piping handling corrosive media where intergranular corrosion must be minimized.
▪ Cryogenic Applications: LNG storage tanks, cryogenic vessels, hydrogen storage, and piping operating at temperatures down to -196°C (-320°F).
▪ General Fabrication: Welding of 304L, 321, and 347 stainless steels in applications requiring superior corrosion resistance or where post-weld heat treatment is not feasible.

FAQS

图片名称

What is the main difference between ER308 and ER308L?

图片名称

ER308L has ultra-low carbon content (≤0.03%) compared to ER308 (≤0.08%), which significantly reduces the risk of intergranular carbide precipitation and provides superior resistance to sensitization, making ER308L ideal for corrosive and cryogenic applications.

图片名称

Can ER308L be used for cryogenic applications?

图片名称

Yes, ER308L (especially low ferrite variants with 3-6 FN) is specifically designed for cryogenic applications down to -196°C (-320°F), offering excellent impact toughness and is commonly used in LNG storage and cryogenic vessel fabrication.

图片名称

What shielding gases are recommended for ER308L welding?

图片名称

For GMAW (MIG), use Ar+1-3% O2 or Ar+2% CO2 with 20-25 L/min flow. For GTAW (TIG), use 100% Argon with 8-15 L/min flow. For SAW, use appropriate basic or agglomerated fluxes compatible with low-carbon stainless steel welding.
