Product Description
AWS E7016 is a low-hydrogen potassium-coated electrode compliant with AWS A5.1 standards, designed for welding mild and low-alloy steels requiring crack-resistant welds with excellent mechanical properties. Featuring a basic flux coating with low hydrogen content (HDM ≤8ml/100g), it excels in applications susceptible to hydrogen-induced cracking. Compatible with AC and DC+ (DCEP) polarities, it supports all-position welding for critical structural applications, pressure vessels, and medium-to-high carbon steels where weld integrity is paramount.
Features
▪ Low-Hydrogen Crack Resistance: The basic potassium coating produces weld metal with diffusible hydrogen content ≤8ml/100g, significantly reducing the risk of hydrogen-induced cracking in medium and high-carbon steels. Essential for welding thick sections and restrained joints.
▪ Excellent Mechanical Properties: Delivers tensile strength of 490-660 MPa, yield strength ≥400 MPa, elongation ≥22%, and good impact toughness at low temperatures. The weld metal exhibits properties matching or exceeding base material requirements.
▪ All-Position Welding: Designed for welding in flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions with stable arc characteristics. The coating provides smooth arc performance and good slag removal in all positions.
▪ Versatile Power Compatibility: Operates effectively on both AC and DC+ power sources, offering flexibility for various welding equipment and job site conditions. The potassium coating ensures stable arc initiation and maintenance on AC current.
Applications
▪ Ideal for critical applications requiring crack-resistant welds with superior mechanical properties, E7016 is widely used in:
▪ Structural & Heavy Fabrication: Bridges, buildings, offshore platforms, and heavy machinery where structural integrity and crack resistance are essential. Suitable for welding medium and high-carbon steels.
▪ Pressure Vessels & Boilers: Fabrication of pressure vessels, boilers, and high-temperature service equipment requiring code-quality welds with excellent mechanical properties.
▪ Pipe Welding: Root and fill passes on piping systems in petrochemical, power generation, and process industries where low hydrogen content is critical for preventing cracking.
▪ Maintenance & Repair: Welding of high-carbon or alloy steels, hardened steels, and restrained joints where hydrogen cracking is a concern.

FAQS
What is the difference between E7016 and E7018?
E7016 has a basic potassium coating without iron powder, while E7018 contains iron powder in the coating for higher deposition rates and smoother operation.
What baking temperature is required for E7018?
E7016 electrodes should be dried at 300-350°C for 1-2 hours before use to ensure low hydrogen content in the weld metal.
Can E7016 weld high-carbon steels?
Yes, E7016 is suitable for welding medium and high-carbon steels due to its low-hydrogen characteristics that prevent hydrogen-induced cracking.
