Product Description

ER385 is a premium low-carbon austenitic stainless steel solid welding wire compliant with AWS A5.9 and EN ISO 14343-A G 18 14 Cu Nb standards, specifically designed for welding low-carbon austenitic stainless steels requiring enhanced corrosion resistance and ductility. Featuring a nominal composition of 17.5-19.5% chromium, 13.5-15.5% nickel, 2.0-3.0% copper, 0.15-0.35% niobium (columbium) and carbon content ≤0.03%, it delivers excellent pitting, crevice and intergranular corrosion resistance, with a full austenitic deposited metal structure. Common diameters range from 0.8-3.2 mm, packaged in coils (15 kg) or straight sticks (5 kg), operating with DC reverse connection (DCEP) for versatile application in corrosive and moderate-temperature industrial environments.

Features

· ER385 offers excellent weldability and all-position performance, with its low-carbon, copper and niobium-added formula ensuring stable arc transfer, minimal spatter, smooth weld bead and easy slag removal, suitable for all welding positions (flat, horizontal, vertical-up, overhead).

· Its smooth surface enables consistent wire feeding, ideal for automatic, semi-automatic and robot welding, reducing wire jamming and improving welding efficiency even in variable fit-up conditions.

· It delivers exceptional tensile strength (≥515 MPa), yield strength (≥205 MPa) and elongation (≥40%), with excellent toughness at both room and low temperatures.

· The addition of copper enhances corrosion resistance to sulfuric acid and other weak acids, while niobium (0.15-0.35%) stabilizes carbon to prevent intergranular corrosion, and its low-carbon content (≤0.03%) further improves corrosion stability.

· Compatible with GMAW (Ar+(2-5%)CO₂ or Ar+(0.5-3%)O₂) and GTAW (pure Ar) processes, with DC reverse connection (DCEP preferred), it requires pre-drying at 200-300°C for 1 hour for critical applications, ensuring low maintenance and operational flexibility.

Applications

Widely used across diverse industries requiring superior corrosion resistance and ductility, ER385 is primarily applied for welding Type 385 stainless steels and other low-carbon austenitic alloys with copper and niobium additions. It is extensively used in chemical processing, food and pharmaceutical industries, and marine engineering for fabricating and repairing components such as piping systems, storage tanks, heat exchangers and sanitary equipment. Suitable for offshore structures, seawater handling equipment and chemical reactors exposed to weak to moderate corrosive media, it is also applied in medical equipment, semiconductor manufacturing and architectural stainless steel, delivering reliable performance in harsh and corrosive operating conditions.

FAQS

图片名称

What is the primary use of ER385 welding wire?

图片名称

ER385 is a low-carbon austenitic stainless steel welding wire, mainly used for welding low-carbon molybdenum-containing stainless steel components. It is widely applied in chemical industry, marine engineering, and food processing industries, suitable for welding components that require high corrosion resistance, such as chemical reaction vessels, marine pipelines, and food processing equipment.

图片名称

How does ER385 achieve excellent corrosion resistance?

图片名称

ER385 has a low-carbon design (carbon content ≤0.03%) to avoid intergranular corrosion, and contains molybdenum and copper elements. Molybdenum enhances the resistance to pitting corrosion, while copper improves the corrosion resistance in weak acid environments. The combination of the two effectively resists the corrosion of various media and ensures long-term stable operation of the weld.

What are the recommended welding parameters for ER385?

图片名称

ER385 is compatible with GMAW and GTAW processes. For GMAW, argon-carbon dioxide mixed gas is recommended; for GTAW, high-purity argon is used as the protective gas. The interpass temperature should be controlled below 150℃, and the weld zone should be kept clean to avoid impurities affecting the weld quality. Pre-drying is not required for general applications, and pre-drying at 150℃ for 1 hour is recommended for critical projects.
