Product Description
ER2209 is a premium duplex (austenitic-ferritic) stainless steel solid welding wire compliant with AWS A5.9 and EN ISO 14343-A G 22 9 Mo N standards, specifically designed for welding duplex stainless steels requiring superior corrosion resistance and high strength. Featuring a nominal composition of 21.0-23.0% chromium, 8.5-10.5% nickel, 2.5-3.5% molybdenum, 0.08-0.20% nitrogen and carbon content ≤0.03%, it delivers excellent pitting, crevice and stress corrosion resistance, with a duplex (austenitic-ferritic) deposited metal structure (ferrite content 40-60%). Common diameters range from 0.8-3.2 mm, packaged in coils (15 kg) or straight sticks (5 kg), operating with DC reverse connection (DCEP) for versatile application in harsh corrosive and marine industrial environments.
Features
· ER2209 offers excellent weldability and all-position performance, with its duplex structure and nitrogen-added formula ensuring stable arc transfer, minimal spatter, smooth weld bead and easy slag removal, suitable for all welding positions (flat, horizontal, vertical-up, overhead).
· Its smooth surface enables consistent wire feeding, ideal for automatic, semi-automatic and robot welding, reducing wire jamming and improving welding efficiency even in variable fit-up conditions.
· It delivers exceptional tensile strength (≥690 MPa), yield strength (≥450 MPa) and elongation (≥25%), with excellent toughness and resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
· The combination of high chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen enhances superior corrosion resistance to seawater, chlorides and acidic media, while its duplex structure provides higher strength than conventional austenitic stainless steels.
· Compatible with GMAW (Ar+(2-5%)CO₂ or Ar+(0.5-3%)O₂) and GTAW (pure Ar) processes, with DC reverse connection (DCEP preferred), it requires pre-drying at 200-300°C for 1 hour for critical applications, ensuring low maintenance and operational flexibility.
Applications
Widely used across diverse industries requiring high strength and superior corrosion resistance, ER2209 is primarily applied for welding Type 2205, 2209 duplex stainless steels and other duplex alloys. It is extensively used in marine engineering, offshore oil and gas, and chemical processing industries for fabricating and repairing components such as offshore platforms, seawater pipelines, heat exchangers and chemical reactors. Suitable for desalination plants, brine handling equipment and acid storage tanks exposed to high chloride environments, it is also applied in pulp and paper manufacturing, wastewater treatment and petrochemical refineries, delivering reliable performance in harsh and corrosive operating conditions.

FAQS
What is the primary use of ER2209 welding wire?
ER2209 is primarily used for welding Type 2205 and 2209 duplex stainless steels and other similar duplex alloys. It is extensively applied in marine engineering, offshore oil and gas, and chemical processing industries to fabricate and repair offshore platforms, seawater pipelines, heat exchangers and chemical reactors exposed to high chloride and corrosive environments.
How does ER2209 achieve excellent corrosion resistance and high strength?
It has a duplex (austenitic-ferritic) structure with ferrite content ranging from 40% to 60%, and its high chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen content enhances superior resistance to pitting, crevice and stress corrosion cracking. The duplex structure also provides higher mechanical strength than conventional austenitic stainless steels, ensuring stable performance in harsh conditions.
What are the recommended welding parameters for ER2209?
It is compatible with GMAW and GTAW processes. For GMAW, Ar+(2-5%)CO₂ or Ar+(0.5-3%)O₂ is recommended; for GTAW, pure argon is adopted. DC reverse connection (DCEP) is preferred, and pre-drying at 200-300°C for 1 hour is suggested for critical applications to ensure weld quality and corrosion resistance.
